An annual tradition, Festivus is a nonsectarian celebration at the end of the Fall semester. Planned and implemented by the HAC under the guidance of the FHOH, Festivus is also the reveal of the Crawford signature ice cream flavor.
A traditional family-style dinner, games and feats of strength, a fire for burning the previous year's regrets, ice cream and resident-designed t-shirts attract residents to celebrate together on the evening of the last day of their first semester.
Students submit creative designs for the Festivus t-shirt anonymously, which are then voted on by the house. Our tradition of addressing each t-shirt with a personalized note from the HAC for each resident elevates the shirts from a party take-away to a gift from the HAC to the residents in honor of the halfway point of our year together.
Festivus is a curious event with its own quirky traditions: an unadorned aluminum pole instead of a Christmas tree, meatloaf and spaghetti for dinner instead of a fancy meal. A weird and playful holiday, Festivus is perfectly in keeping with the spirit at Crawford House. In 2017-2018, Festivus was the notable for the introduction of our Crawford-inspiring Ice Cream flavor, the "Crawford Gender Neutral," a nut-free, dairy-free, gluten-free ice cream flavor designed by our partners at Pied Piper Creamery to celebrate the inclusive experience at Crawford.
